The Butterfly's Trip- or El Viaje de la Mariposa- is a bilingual story about a butterfly from the Dominican Republic traveling west into Haiti. Having heard of Haiti's natural beauty, the butterfly embarks on a journey to see its flowers.Cultural disputes hinder the butterfly's progress as a guard stops it at the border. Instead of resorting to aggressive actions to make it past, the butterfly connects with the border guard, who has long since grown weary of watching the national line for so long. The butterfly is able to move forth and experience the beauty that its neighbors have to offer.
Written and illustrated by Eva Jiménez, the story serves as a lesson to children about international relations, Caribbean culture, and the importance of patience, kindness, and cooperation.
The Butterfly's Trip features hand-painted illustrations spanning 45 pages. All text is in both Spanish and English, allowing almost any child the opportunity the read the story and cross a cultural border of their own as they learn a new language.
